MFL
Intent
The intent of the MFL curriculum at Appley Bridge All Saints’ CE Academy is to foster a profound love for language learning and to instill curiosity and appreciation for different cultures. We aim to develop communication skills by equipping children with an ability to communicate effectively. This involves a comprehensive focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with structured opportunities for real-life communication. We seek to promote cultural understanding and enrich pupils’ global awareness by introducing pupils to aspects of different cultures. Our MFL curriculum encourages children to grow in confidence, take risks and become resilient by learning a different language in a safe and supportive classroom environment. We aim to inspire enthusiasm for continuous language acquisition and lay the foundation for future language study by discussing how knowledge of different languages can benefit future career opportunities.
Implementation
To implement our MFL curriculum effectively, we ensure that children in Key Stage Two receive weekly French lessons. Following the Language Angels scheme, planning is progressive and sessions are designed to be engaging and interactive, integrating dynamic activities such as games and songs that encourage active participation. This approach helps cater to different learning styles while ensuring that lessons are enjoyable. Regular formative assessments are conducted through a variety of methods, including observations, oral interactions, and written tasks. Teachers tailor instruction to meet the individual needs of pupils. Children have the opportunity to share their learning during assemblies and school events.
Impact
As a result of experiencing our MFL curriculum, our children develop a passion for languages. They become outward facing learners who have an appreciation of different cultures. The children are confident communicators who are able to implement their French knowledge to navigate real life contexts in a different language. Pupils are inspired to continue to learn languages beyond their time at All Saints’.
