Wider Curriculum Activities
At Appley Bridge All Saints’ Primary Academy, we teach all the subjects in the National Curriculum – a set of subjects used by primary schools so that all children learn the same things – and we have also developed a ‘wider curriculum’ to complement and extend the children’s learning. Every year we review our curriculum, looking for new ways to enrich the experience our children have at school.
After School Clubs:
- We have an ever-changing list of after-school activities including football, netball, rounders, pathfinders (a fun look at the bible), recorders, first aid, gardening, ukulele, various art clubs and the choir. The clubs offered change half-termly and run after school, finishing at 4.30pm.
- Our choir is getting a good reputation in the local area, as they have visited and performed at a range of venues, including Wild Mint cafe at Golden Days, the Appley Bridge Duck Race and at Twinkle House in Skelmersdale, in addition to the much loved Christmas Carol Service.
- Through Lancashire Music Service, we are able to offer the opportunity to study a musical instrument; currently we have children learning guitar, keyboard and piano. The Music Service are able to provide a wide range of lessons, please ask for information.
- Our sports clubs supplement the lessons in school. We work with West Lancashire Sports Partnership to offer the chance to participate in a wide number of competitions and almost every child will represent the school in the form of competitions during their time at All Saints’. We currently hold a Platinum School Games Award for our participation in events, as well as an Equal Access Award for our commitment to girls’ football.
- We were awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Silver Mark. Please click HERE for further details
Residential Trips:
- We are proud to be able to offer the children the opportunity to participate in up to three residentials whilst they are with us:
- In Year 3 we visit Willersley Castle near Matlock, Derbyshire for two nights and enjoy a total of nine exciting activities..
- Every other year we offer a two night ‘City Break’ for those children in Year 4 and Year 5, in recent years this has included London, Edinburgh and York.
- Our Year 6 class go to Tower Wood on the shores of Windermere at the start of the year and take part in several challenging outdoor activities including teamwork and problem solving tasks.
Trips & Activities:
Our teachers plan exciting activities to complement the learning in class. For example, the Reception class have been visiting ‘Bring yer Wellies’ at Houghton, Preston, whilst Year 1 visit Blackpool Zoo. As well as trips out of school, we also have immersive history days, when the children are transported back to Stone Age and Saxon times. Dressing up appropriately, a visiting tutor leads the day and we are able to make use of our own grounds and the Fairy Glen.
Other Opportunities To Broaden The Children’s Experiences Include:
- Various visitors to our school, the Fire Brigade, writers and poets, yoga sessions, an annual pantomime.
- Hosting Macmillan coffee mornings and raising funds for charities such as Children in Need and the Royal British Legion. We also have three food bank collections annually, to support The Brick and Skelmersdale.
- Participating in Lancashire’s schemes to foster a life-long love of reading. Brilliant Book Awards for Y2 and Fantastic Book Awards for Y6 give children the chance to discuss a range of new books and vote for their favourite.
- Our Y6 class also take part in the Archbishop’s Young Leaders Award which develops life skills and encourages children to take action to ‘be the change you want to see’.
- We believe strongly in pupil voice and give our children many opportunities to develop their confidence and become more articulate through groups including Sports Council, House Captains and our Heroes groups- World Heroes, Faith Heroes and Community Heroes.
The wider curriculum gives us the chance to offer new and exciting activities for the children and to invite visitors into our school with special talents and skills to share.
We are always on the lookout for ways to widen our curriculum further and, in doing so, we hope to excite, engage and inspire our children.
